The company

Suffolk-based Saxon Packaging specialises in the design, development and manufacture of corrugated products including cases, die cuts, pallet boxes, point of sale stands and point of purchase trays, along with shelf-ready packaging. The company has been at its Lowestoft premises for almost three decades and in that time has grown from one to six units with a total capacity of around 40,000 sq ft.

The challenge

The company’s gradual expansion over the years meant that storage for inks, tooling and other items was situated on the main floor and taking up valuable working space. There was a need for a centrally located storage facility with the flexibility to store many types of items, which incorporated easy access for staff and for loading and unloading product.

The solution

Saxon’s managing director Paul King was already in discussions with several local companies when he called in Amvar, who gave a very competitive quote and, equally importantly, looked at the project from the point of view of both the working environment and Health & Safety.

It was decided to install a mezzanine floor for storage, with pedestrian stair access and a large goods lift enabling the safe transport of heavy and bulky equipment up and down between the storage area and the main floor. This was a vast improvement on using high reach forklift trucks to lift heavy tooling on and off the top floor, which was a much more precarious method of transportation.

The mezzanine flooring gave the company an extra 144 m2 of valuable storage space and freed up useful productive space on the shop floor.

The Amvar difference

“Even though Amvar is not local to us, they proved to be the best choice,” said Paul King. “As well as a very competitive price for the supply and installation of the mezzanine floor, they provided invaluable advice on the most effective use of space and crucial health and safety concerns that we might not have considered otherwise.

“The finished installation has provided us with a much clearer working area downstairs, along with a safer and more productive method of handling inks and tooling – keeping them in a more controlled, well-planned and managed environment.

“Amvar are a completely professional company who managed the project with us in an informed and clear manner, providing support and information throughout the process to meet the agreed deadlines.”
